Birth of George Mackie, Liberal MP for Caithness and Sutherland 1964-66

A stalwart of the post war Liberal Party in Scotland, George Mackie contested South Angus in 1959 before being elected for Caithness and Sutherland in 1964. In the Commons he served as Scottish Liberal Whip but his time as an MP was a short one and he lost his seat at the following election in 1966 to Robert Maclennan. In 1974 he went to the House of Lords as Lord Mackie of Benshie where he sat on the Liberal and Liberal Democrat front benches for 25 years. Mackie was actively involved in the Scottish Liberal Party organisation, serving as its chairman from 1965 to 1970 and as its president in the 1980s.
