The East Midlands has traditionally been unpromising territory for the party, returning just two Liberal Democrat MPs since World War II.  Nevertheless the party has a fair record of contesting elections here compared with other regions. Compiling this Index has faced the special problem, however, of constituencies within the Humberside district established in the 1970s. Candidates in elections in the constituencies of Brigg, Grimsby and Scunthorpe up to and including the General Election of 1970 have been included in this Index. After that date these constituencies appear in the Index for the Yorkshire Region. More than thirty individual candidates have fought in more than one region, some in two or more. Surprisingly, many of these peripatetic individuals have fought constituencies in the West Midlands, equally unpromising territory for the party until recent years. The East Midlands has produced fewer outstanding party figures or characters than most other regions, though it has seen several political ‘mavericks.’ Many entries are thin on biographical detail.
The Liberal Democrats did not nominate a candidate to oppose the retiring MP, Anna Soubry, standing as a Change candidate, at Broxtowe at the General Election of 2019.
